In addition to the information provided in the other subfields, aviation psychology includes areas of physiological, cognitive and perceptual psychology.
The Crew Hazards and Error Management (CHEM) project at the NASA Langley Research Center develops human response measurement technologies to assess the effects of advanced crew station concepts on the crew's ability to perform flight management tasks effectively. Behavioral response and psychophysiological response measurement systems have been developed to assess mental loading, mental states, stress, task engagement, and situation awareness.
NASA's Psychophysiological Research Facility researches the relationship between pilots' physiology and performance during emergency flying conditions and offers an autogentic-feedback training to improve pilot performance during emergency flying conditions. The U.S. Navy also provides aerospace physiology courses for emergency flying situations.
At NASA's Ames Research Laboratory, researchers have studied a Cognitive Systems Model for human/automation dynamics in airspace management. Other cognitive studies have been done to investigate a pilot's cognitive processes and cognitive restraints in aviation accidents. For those who are interested in this type of research, Ohio State University offers a Cognitive/Experimental Psychology program.
The National Institute of Aviation Research focuses some of their studies on perception and performance in human factors. Some projects include cognitive skills and decision making, visual attention, attentional skills, stressor effects, and vibration effects on performance. The Beckman Institute has a human perception and performance group who researches topics such as the manner in which perceptual and cognitive processes are modified during the learning of new skills and the perception of spatial and temporal relations between moving objects.
