The West Chester University Department of History prides itself on its teaching. It is known for its outstanding teacher preparation program, one of the few in which history professors teach the methods of social studies instruction and supervise student-teachers. With a full time staff of fifteen professors, each of whom holds a doctorate in his or her field, the Department offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses in American, European, and non-Western history. The Department offers three degree programs: Bachelor of Arts in History (either with or without the option of elective social studies certification), Master of Arts in History, and Master of Education, History Concentration. It also directs one of the University's interdisciplinary major programs, American Studies.
