ASAP! The Actuarial Science Academy Program of West Chester University

In an effort to broaden the participation of underrepresented minorities in the mathematical sciences, West Chester University proudly announces this new program for rising high school seniors with an interest in mathematics!

What is ASAP!?

ASAP! will host rising high school seniors who have been recognized by their high school mathematics or science teachers as having a strong aptitude for mathematics for a three-day immersion into the life of an actuary and college student during the summer followed by a one-day shadow experience at the university in the fall. It is aimed to educate participating scholars about the Actuarial Science career and show that being good at math is cool and rewarding.  Along the way, the scholars will be introduced to many of the services WCU and its Mathematics Department provides; sessions with Admissions and Financial Aid will also be provided.

What are the benefits?

After the three-day program Summer Academy and the Fall Shadow Experience, scholars will be able to:

  • discuss what an actuary does in the insurance field and in the financial services industry;
  • summarize what is required to become an actuary;
  • learn about current employment trends in the field of actuarial science and risk management;
  • network with local actuaries, actuarial science alumni and ¬†students from WCU, and join a social network group on LinkedIn connecting the scholars to these professionals and students;
  • identify various professional organizations representing actuaries;
  • apply for admission to WCU’s Actuarial Science Program and for Financial Aid;
  • navigate WCU’s campus and Mathematics department, and locate services each provides;
  • recognize the unique experiences WCU’s Actuarial Science program offers.

What are the financial benefits?

With grants from several sources, West Chester University is able to run the Summer Academy and the Fall Shadow Expereince at no-cost for students selected to attend the program. Moreover, each student that enrolls in WCU's Actuarial Science program the following year will recieve a stipend to cover the cost of study materials for future actuarial exam. An incentive of at least $100.
