The FRENCH language undergraduate program

The French program at West Chester offers both a major and minor option at the undergraduate level:

  • Our French major consists of ten (10) French courses beginning with FRE 102, a course in linguistics, a French subject matter course from another department, and a second language up to the 202 level. The major may be part of PA K-12 State Certification in French.
  • Our minor is 6 courses beginning at FRE 101 or above, limit two 100-level, two 200-level.

We will accept transfer courses for the major and the minor up to 50% of the requirements.

Basic language courses are offered each semester and summer sessions:
French 101 and 102--first year; French 201 and 202--second year.

In the Spring semester, we offer the culture cluster in English on Francophone African culture (EFR 330), and advanced courses in French (FRE 305, FRE 303, FRE 401, and a FRE 420 seminar). In Spring 2012, the FRE 420 seminar topic will be laughter and comedy.

In the First Summer Session, we offer a ten-day immersion oral proficiency course, May 9-19, and FRE 315-80/ FRE 520-80, an advanced oral expression course meeting four or five evenings a week (4-8 p.m.), also for ten days, May 29 - June 8.

The last week of first summer session, we offer a week-long summer immersion workshop on Teaching French AP Language (FRE 421 or FRE 521-20).

During the Second Summer Session we offer a topics seminar Tuesday and Thursday mornings; in 2012 this seminar will be on Francophone African Cinema (RE 420-30 and FRE 520-30).

In the Fall semester, we offer a culture cluster in English (EFR 350, French Civilization on Film), and advanced French courses (FRE 302-Phonetics, FRE 304-Literature Survey, FRE 350-French Cinema, and a seminar).

Study Abroad Options and Student Activities

We encourage you to spend a semester or a year in France or a French speaking country with one of the many available programs we can recommend. Our newest program is with AIU in Aix-en-Provence, an exciting choice of courses at all levels in a beautiful historic dynamic city.

We coordinate with a summer study program in Guadeloupe for intermediate and advanced credit, from the Institut de Média Langues Caraïbes. Contact Dr. Moscatelli (amoscatelli@wcupa.edu)for more information.

Financial assistance for study abroad is available on a competitive basis through several departmental grants (see "Awards").

Our French Club meets for meals, museum tours, films, operas. See the club web page for updates.

Certification

We have the B.A. in French with or without certification, and the M.A. and M.Ed. master's programs (see our graduate pages).

We also offer Pennsylvania K-12 certification in French at the undergraduate and graduate levels (see the Certification page).
