Department of Sports Medicine

The Department of Sports Medicine, within the College of Health Sciences, has as its primary role the preparation of students for careers in athletic training and related health care fields. Fundamental to such a career is successful completion of the certification examination given by the Board of Certification, Inc. (BOC). The Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training in the Department of Sports Medicine provides access to all the prerequisites for the board of certification exam.

The certified athletic trainer (ATC) is a health care professional who specialize in preventing, recognizing, managing and rehabilitating injuries that result from physical activity. As part of a complete health care team, the certified athletic trainer works under the direction of a licensed physician and in cooperation with other health care professionals, athletics administrators, coaches and parents.
