Athletic Training Admission Procedure

Admissions

Students are currently admitted to the BS in Athletic Training as incoming freshmen. Interested students must apply for admission to the university, listing the BS in Athletic Training as their first choice of academic program. Qualified students will be expected to participate in a formal interview with members of the Department of Sports Medicine faculty. Minimum guidelines for the interview include:

  • Combined SAT (Critical Reading and Math sections only) score of about 1070 and/or class rank in the top 20% of the high school class;
  • High school coursework in Biology, Chemistry, and/or Physics, and Advanced Math;
  • Experience in high school athletics as a participant and/or student athletic trainer aide is preferred;
  • Letters of recommendation from coaches, physicians, athletic trainers, teachers and/or other allied health professionals may be submitted, but are not required.


Currently all requests for transfer into the BS in Athletic Training, either by students from other universities or by WCU students looking to change majors, are handled on a case by case basis. Usually, those students must come to WCU in another program, complete prerequisite courses and then apply for the program. The number of students accepted in this manner depends upon the number of openings available in that year. This selection process is competitive.

Degree Requirements

  1. General Education Requirements:
    Refer to the University Undergraduate Catalog page 36 for specifics on these requirements.
  2. Sports Medicine Requirements:
    Students must earn a minimum grade of C in the courses listed below. In order to be recommended for the Board of Certification exam, students must have a minimum cummulative GPA of 2.5 in the following courses:
    BIO 259, 269; HEA 303; KIN 352,361,475; SMD 204, 212, 272, 310, 311, 312, 313, 315, 316,414, 417, 418, 454; SML 261, 310, 311.
