Michael S. Weiss, Ph.D.
Professor
Department Chairperson
Dr. Weiss received his B.A. from Long Island University and his M.S. and Ph.D. from Purdue University. He teaches courses in speech and hearing science, including anatomy and physiology, neurology and experimental phonetics. He has served as faculty advisor to the department's chapter of NSSLHA, the National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association and is a mentor for undergraduate and graduate students who wish to pursue research. His own research interests include the study of voice production and voice disorders with a special interest in speech produced with laryngeal prostheses. He also has a special interest in investigating the effectiveness of computers as a teaching tool in the classroom. Dr. Weiss has been a member of the WCU faculty since 1978.
Cheryl Gunter, Ph.D., CCC-SLP

Dr. Gunter earned the B.A. degree (with honors) in Speech-Language Pathology from The University of Tennessee-Knoxville and the M.A. degree in Speech-Language Pathology from Memphis State University (now The University of Memphis). She then completed a Clinical Fellowship in Childhood Aphasia at The University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center-Memphis. She then earned the Ph.D. degree in Communication Sciences from The University of Texas-Austin. Prior to her appointment at West Chester University, she held an appointment as Assistant Professor and Clinic Coordinator, then an appointment as Associate Professor (with tenure) and Clinic Coordinator at Iowa State University-Ames. In addition, she was named a Fulbright Scholar and, with support from the Council for the International Exchange of Scholars, held an appointment in the Institute of Health Care at The University of Malta. While her primary instructional and clinical practice interest has centered on pediatric communication development and disorders, Dr. Gunter has also instructed courses and seminars related to various dimensions of clinical service delivery and has pursued her scholarly interest in clinical practice, clinical education, and clinical instruction issues. Dr. Gunter has maintained an active consultation practice and has been a leader in various state and national level professional associations as an officer and a publication editor. At present, she serves the Pennsylvania Speech-Language-Hearing Association as an Executive Board member - Vice-President for Publications - and Editor of the Keystater.
Mareile Koenig, Ph.D., CCC-SLP

Mareile Koenig
Dr. Mareile Koenig earned a B.S. and M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology at Southern Illinois University and a Ph.D. in Speech-Language and Hearing Sciences at the University of Illinois. She has extensive clinical experience in supporting children with ASD through home-based and center-based models involving both behavioral and developmental evidence-based approaches. Her research interests include the professional preparation of SLPs for autism treatment; cross-disciplinary collaboration; and issues related to the communication, social cognition, and behavior of children with ASD. Dr. Koenig participated as a Co-Facilitator of the Education/Certification Sub-Committee of the Pennsylvania Autism Task Force and she serves as a consultant to support groups for families of children with autism. She is also a collaborator in the cross-disciplinary Autism Certification Program at West Chester University.

Jennifer Means
Dr. Jennifer Means received her B.A. and M.A. degrees from West Chester University and her Doctor of Speech-Language Pathology (SLP.D.) from Nova Southeastern University. She returned to her alma mater as a faculty member in 2002 with extensive experience as a public school speech-language pathologist with an expertise in reading and writing disorders. Her primary teaching responsibilities are in the areas related to school-based practices, fluency disorders and clinical supervision. Dr. Means was recently appointed the Director of Clinical Speech, Language and Hearing Services. As Director she coordinates services for children and adults in the department's on-site clinic. She also coordinates school-based and medical internships for all graduate students. She is the author of publications and presentations addressing clinical supervision, educational law, and school-bases services.

Dr. Elizabeth Grillo received her B.M. degree in voice performance from Indiana University, her M.S. degree from Teacher's College Columbia University in speech-language pathology, and her Ph.D. degree in communication science and disorders from the University of Pittsburgh. Before joining the WCU faculty, Dr. Grillo was an adjunct instructor at West Virginia University, a guest lecturer at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and a guest lecturer, study coordinator, and lab manager at the University of Pittsburgh. Her clinical experience includes serving as a voice specialist and an acute care speech-language pathologist. Her research interests involve clinical voice disorders. Currently, her research is addressing aerodynamic measurements of voice, development and application of her Global Voice Therapy Model, and the influence of auditory and kinesthetic feedback in the production of different voice patterns.

Dr. Patricia Swasey Washington received a B.A. in Speech-Language Pathology and Spanish from Douglass College, Rutgers University in 1987, an M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology from William Paterson University in 1990, and a Ph.D. in Communication Sciences from Temple University in 2010. She has extensive experience as a speech-language pathologist, providing services to monolingual and bilingual individuals in a variety of settings (including school and healthcare). Prior to joining the faculty of the Communicative Disorders Department of West Chester University, Dr. Swasey Washington served as interim director of clinical education and clinical services as well as speech-language supervisor for the Temple University Speech-Language-Hearing Center. Her research focuses on the development of language in Spanish-speaking English Language Learners.
Sojung Kim, Ph.D., CCC-SLP

Dr. Sojung Kim received her B.A. degree in child psychology and education from Seung Kyun Kwan University in Seoul, Korea. In 2002, Dr. Kim completed her M.A. in speech language pathology at Ohio University. She worked as an early intervention provider for the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene for four years where she managed a caseload of 20 to 30 infants and toddlers per year and supervised speech language pathologists. In 2006, Dr. Kim started working on her Ph.D. degree engaging in research endeavors as part of the Infant Child Research Programs in the department of speech and hearing science at Arizona State University. After completion of her Ph.D. in summer 2010, she worked as a faculty research associate at Arizona State University by supervising graduate clinicians and teaching undergraduate and graduate classes. She joined the WCU faculty in fall 2011. Her research interests include language assessment and intervention in infants and toddlers, research methodology and statistics, and diverse computer software programs for language transcripts.

Dr. Brudereck graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, a Master's degree in Audiology from Towson University in Maryland, and a Doctorate of Audiology from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, School of Audiology.

Dr. Brudereck's interests include Amplification, Professional Issues in Audiology, Auditory Processing Disorders, and Coding and Billing. She teaches Hearing Disorders, Aural Rehabilitation and supervises Graduate Hearing Clinic. Dr. Brudereck is an active member of the American Academy of Audiology and Pennsylvania Academy of Audiology, as well as several other local and national organizations. She is Board Certified in Audiology and holds a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology. She also co-owns a private audiology practice in Berks County. In her spare time, Dr. Brudereck enjoys spending time with her husband, Jason, and children, William and Maggie.
Judith Curtin, Au.D. CCC-A, CCC-SLP Judith Curtin
Dr. Judith A Curtin AuD has extensive work in aural rehabilitation and habilitation over the past 35 years. Her early career focused on gerontology for communicative disorders and evolved into creating one of the first clinics for aural rehabilitation in the United States. Her research and work led her to early and ground breaking work in cochlear implants with congenitally deaf children. She has worked nationally and internationally in several languages. She most recently was chair of Hearing and Hearing Disorders for Children for ASHA. She teaches Therapy for the Hearing Impaired, Hearing Disorders and supervises students in Therapy for hearing impaired. She earned her master degree in Speech pathology from Marquette University, post-graduate training in Audiology at Temple University and her AuD form University of Florida.
Dale Gregore, M.S., CCC-SLP Dale Gregore

Ms. Gregore earned an B.S. in Communicative Disorders from WCU and a M.S. degree from Boston University.  Ms. Gregore has over 28 years experience in medical speech pathology and enjoys sharing her clinical experience with her students. Areas of interest include exercise induced vocal cord dysfunction (EI-VCD)or VCD due to GE reflux; voice disorders; esophageal or chronic dysphagia due to multiple medical/ surgical problems; and the use of modalities in the treatment of dysphagia. Current research interests include working with Dr. Grillo on the GVA; WCU Department of Athletic Training and WCU athletes on sports respiration, and studying the concepts of mentoring versus coaching in SLP clinical skill development. Ms. Gregore is currently Program Manager, the Department of Speech Pathology at Christiana Care Health System in Wilmington, DE.

 

Colleen Reynolds, M.A., CCC-SLP Colleen Reynolds

Ms. Reynolds received a B.A. in English from Ursinus College in 1976 and an M.A. in Communicative Disorders from West Chester University in 1982. She has 26 years of experience as a practicing medical speech-language pathologist working in acute care, rehab, outpatient, long-term care, and home care settings. She is currently serving as the Clinical Manager of Speech, Dysphagia, and Audiology Services and as Assistant Administrative Director for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Services at Crozer Chester Medical Center. Her clinical passions include pediatric and adult dysphagia and neurogenic speech disorders. She is also a Reiki level II practitioner, a certified holistic health counselor and an amateur ghost hunter.

Tamara Hoffritz, M.A., CCC-SLP Tamara Hoffritz

Tamara Hoffritz, MA, CCC-SLP received her B.A.in English Literature from the State University of New York at Albany and her M.A. in Communicative Disorders and Sciences from the State University of New York at Geneseo. She currently evaluates and treats children with a range of speech and language needs at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Previous clinical work included acute adult and pediatric hospital based treatment, intensive behavioral/ home based therapy for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and consultative services to regional school districts for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, Semantic-Pragmatic Language Disorders and Childhood Apraxia of Speech. Presentations have included guest lectures at Nazareth College and the University of Rochester Medical Center, and the International Meeting for Autism Research and the Children's Health Care Conference. Tamara has completed fellowship training and has served as a faculty member of the U.S. Dept. of Maternal and Child Health's Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) program, to develop future leaders in health care. Her research interests include transition to adulthood for individuals with developmental disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Susan Pacella, M.A., CCC-SLP Susan Pacella

Susan Pacella earned a B.A. at Geneva College (2001) and an M.A. at West Chester University (2003), both in Communicative Disorders. After graduation from WCU, she served as a private SLP consultant to various schools through Austill's Rehabilitative Services. In the fall of 2004, she began a full time SLP position at the Unionville-Chadds Ford School District, providing evaluation and intervention services to students in kindergarten through 12th grade. In 2006 she joined WCU's Department of Communicative Disorders as an adjunct faculty member. Ms. Pacella is particularly interested in teaching student clinicians to develop effective goal writing and progress monitoring skills as these skills relate to a client's response to intervention, especially in a school-based setting. In addition to her professional work, Ms. Pacella enjoys playing the piano, singing, and spending time with her husband and their two young children, Levi and Addy.

Patricia Vaselli, M.A., CCC-SLP Patricia Vaselli

Patricia Vaselli received her Bachelor's Degree in Speech Language Pathology and Audiology in Brazil at the Universidade Federal de Sao Paulo. She worked as a private speech language pathologist and audiologist in Sao Paulo for 10 years before moving to Pennsylvania in 1996. Her work as an audiologist involved assessing the hearing of factory workers who presented with noise induced hearing loss along with educating workers and employers on how to prevent hearing losses. In 2004, Ms. Vaselli earned her M.A. from West Chester University. She then worked in the Delaware public schools as a speech-language pathologist, also providing bilingual therapy for bilingual children with language disorders. Ms. Vaselli speaks Portuguese and Spanish in addition to English. Currently she works in the West Chester Area School District providing evaluations and therapy for students from kindergarten through fifth grade.

Melinda St. George, M.A., CCC-SLP Melinda St. George

Ms. St. George completed a B.A. (1990) and an M.A. (1996) in Communicative Disorders at WCU. She holds a CCC-SLP from ASHA and a PA State license in SLP. She has been employed as a school-based SLP since January 1991, with experience in grades K-12. Currently Ms. St. George is Speech and Language Program Supervisor for the Delaware County Intermediate Unit . Ms. George has supervised affiliation practicum students and mentored SLPs in their CFY. She is currently enrolled in Immaculata University's Supervisory Certificate in Special Education Post-Graduate Program.

Jackie Schubert., M.A., CCC-SLP

Ms. Schubert received a B.S. in Education (1993) and an M.A. in Communicative Disorders (1996), both at WCU. Her previous experiences service delivery in a preschool class for children with disabilities, early intervention, and elementary school children and youth (5 to 21 years). Jackie has also worked with adults in a long-term care setting. Jackie is currently working in the public school system, providing both speech-language services to children and serving \as a consultant to districts that have not had speech and language services in the past.

Stacey Kupczyn, M.S., CCC-SLP

Ms. Kupczyn is currently working at Parkview Elementary School which is located in Stratford New Jersey. She received her B.S. at the University of Wisconsin (1985) and her M.A. at College of New Jersey (1987) (previously- Trenton State College). Her hobbies and interests include traveling, reading, training her dog but her greatest enjoyment comes from raising her two children.
