Camp Abilities is a residential sports weekend serving 20-25 young people who are blind or visually impaired, ages 7 to 18. Participants live in Pennsylvania, Delaware,Maryland, Virginia, New York and New Jersey. The College of Health Sciences and the Department of Kinesiology at West Chester University sponsors this program.
The young athletes take part in a 3 day, 3 night overnight experience that introduces tandem biking, swimming, beep baseball, goalball, track and field, cooperative games and adventire climbing activities. These teach and encourage and teach these campers to be physically active, healthy, and independent.
Visit www.campabilitiespa.org for information.
Thirty five Adapted P.E. minors also benefit from this weekend as a "service learning" experience. But if you look at all the smiles in that photo, I think you'll see the real benefit of the Camp Abilities experience. The WCU students are currently enrolled in the Adapted Physical Education minor and have completed several courses in adapted sports and physical activity. They practice their newly aquired teaching skills while absorbing teaching strategies from veteran adapted sports specialists. West Chester University provides fields and facilities free of charge for the sports venues.
