Recycling in Residence Life

Recyclemania

WCU participates in Recyclemania. Look our efforts up under Participating Schools.

West Chester University is committed to providing a comprehensive recycling program for all residents of campus housing to use. The Offices of Residence Life and Housing Services, University Student Housing, Custodial Services, and Moving and Recycling Services work together to make sure the program runs as efficiently as possible.

However, the real key to having a successful recycling program rests with the residents! By following a few simple rules and keeping an eye on your fellow hall members, we can all do our part to keep unnecessary items out of the waste stream.

On each floor of every residence hall and in select locations in the apartment complexes, you should find two recycling containers - one for mixed paper and one for other acceptable comingled items. The items that can be recycled are:

Mixed Office Paper:

Acceptable Not Permitted
  • Office Paper
  • Glossy Paper
  • File Folders
  • Manila folders
  • Envelopes
  • Pamphlets
  • Magazines
  • Newspapers
  • Phone books
  • Catalogs
  • Cardboard (*see below)
  • Air Freight envelopes
  • Restroom & Kitchen waste
  • Hardcover books (*see below)
  • Metal or plastic binders
  • Waxed paper
  • Styrofoam packing materials

Commingled:

Acceptable Not Permitted
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Plastics #1 and #2
  • Aluminum cans
  • Rinsed food cans
  • Restroom and Kitchen waste
  • Styrofoam packing materials

Cardboard: Includes cardboard packing boxes and hardcover books. Does not include nonpaper-based packing material like bubble wrap or Styrofoam.

As you take items from your room or apartment, please use the appropriate containers for recycled materials and place all other trash in the designated receptacles. It is that easy!

If you have questions about the program or find that containers are not available, please contact your Resident Assistant or Hall Director.
