Interactive Dance Workshop

This presentation addresses the joys and trials of the first WCU Interactive Dance Workshop. The WCU Interactive Dance Workshop is built around two courses: Computer Music in the Department of Music Theory/Composition and Improvised Dance in the Department of Theater/Dance. Students in computer design, "composed instruments," which are informed by, or actually triggered by, the gesture of the dancers. Teams of composers and dancers work together to create a performance piece, while exploring a variety of electronic sensors and learn to map sensor data to sound/music in visually and aurally compelling ways. Professors Van Stiefel (computer music) and Liz Staruch (dance) co-teach and are joined by guest artists Miro Dance Theater of Philadelphia.

This study examines how pre-service teachers enrolled in an instructional technology class, applied the course content and concepts when they taught technology to youths or senior citizens in the community through a course-embedded service-learning project. This study also shows the matching patterns between the participants' reflection and the literature review.

Collaborating on a Virtual WCU

The "Collaborating on a Virtual WCU" project brought together participants from three university constituencies to develop and implement a virtual West Chester University on Second Life, a well-known online community that has become the virtual home to many innovative academic institutions around the world. This session will provide a background on the Virtual WCU project, conduct a tour of the WCU Second Life island, reflect on the challenges of using virtual spaces in higher education, and hopefully allow participants to explore the space themselves.

With all of today's advancements in educational technology it is now more important than ever for the academic community to embrace student perspectives. In many cases, if not most, students are much more familiar with current technology than are faculty. Understanding how students are adapting and reacting to technological shifts in the classroom is paramount in maximizing the effectiveness of new educational platforms as they emerge. In this discussion a panel of graduate and undergraduate students will explore and evaluate how their educational experience has changed, for better or worse, over their academic careers. Emphasis will be placed on what they view as both positive and negative trends in their use of educational technology.

The goal was to apply mobile technologies in new ways to connect resources to students who have short, scholarly resource questions. The study focused on the use of CREDO. Dr. McConatha, is the 2007 recipient of the Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award for his use of technology in the classroom and a founding director of a successful for profit venture in distance education operating since 1995. Dr. McConatha will discuss a future for technology in Higher Education by drawing upon his own experience as a researcher, academic and entrepreneur in the field of learning technologies. His corporate for-profit ventures have informed much of his use of technology in the classroom. He has devoted himself to improving the quality of the classroom experience through technology but is also well aware of the "down side" of these trends. His presentation will address the integration of the newest trends in technology into the world of the Academy and how this may affect students, professors, administrators, politicians and parents.

How Does Anonymity in a Discussion Board Affect Student Responses to Issues Related to Diversity?
