Recommended Computer Specs for Windows Computers

 Operating System:

Windows Vista/Windows 7
(Basic, Premium, Ultimate Editions)
 Processor: Industry standard processor (Intel Core 2 Duo Processor or higher, AMD Athlon 64 X2, AMD Turion 64 X2, etc.)
 Memory:

2 GB (minimum for 32 bit systems)
3 GB (recommended for 32 bit systems)
3 GB (minimum for 64 bit systems)
4 GB or more (recommended for 64 bit systems)

NOTE: 32 bit systems cannot use all of 4 GB of memory so unless you have a 64-bit machine getting the extra GB won't give you the performance boost you are looking for.
 Hard Drive: 300 GB minimum / at least 500GB recommended  
 Networking: Ethernet (network) port/card (and a Wireless card for laptops)
  CD and/or CD/DVD combo drive with CD burning capabilities

Software Applications

All of the software recommended or required is available for free download at the ResNet Software Download page.

** Microsoft Office is NOT available for free download.

  • Microsoft Office 2007 or 2010** or equivalent such as Open Office
  • Anti-Virus Software (Antivirus is MANDATORY to connect to the Residential Network.
  • Anti-Spyware Software (i.e., Windows Defender)

Many anti-virus programs include anti-spyware. We use Microsoft Security Essentials which does include anti-spyware. It is free and can be downloaded from our ResNet Software Download page.

IMPORTANT!!!!! - NEVER install multiple antivirus programs! This could damage your drive and destroy your data!

Accessories

  • Flash Drive (also known as a “Pocket Drive” or "Thumb Drive")
  • Ethernet (network) cable of 15' or more
  • Security Cable-Lock/Device (for laptops)

Tips

  • Brand names are not the best way to choose PCs. Their quality can change dramatically year to year. Read online reviews for any brand you are considering.
  • Remember to use your Student ID for discounts
  • Look into extended manufacturer warranties
