Every person has their own profile. When you log onto the network you have different personal setting, local files, my documents, shortcuts, and favorites.


How do I log into the network?

Below is an example logon screen which will appear when your Windows 7/Vista machine is started. Logging on is simple. Under the thumbnail image, you will see that the user name of the person who was last on that machine appears. All that needs to be done is the typing of your password. If the name that appears is not you, select Switch Users and type in your user name & password.

How do I change my network password?

All the information you need on how to change your password can be found on the main Welcome to the WCU Webmail & Network Account Management page.  Here you will find the link to change your password, check how old your password is and setup the Online Password Reset Tool.



  • To change your password click on the Change your Password / Passphrase link located next to the WCU webmail icon.  Read the password requirements carefully and follow all the steps.

  • You can check how old your password is by clicking on the How old is my password/passphrase link.

  • It is highly recommended that users configure the Password Reset Tool.  This tool will enable you to change your password in the event that you forgot the password.  You will not need to call the help desk to have the password reset.  Click the Online Password Reset Tool link located in the Unable to Login? window and follow the steps.


How do I lock my computer in Windows 7/Vista?

Hold down the windows key (located between the control and alt key on the keyboard) and the L key to lock your computer or hold down the control, alt, delete keys then the windows security box will appear and click on Lock Computer.

To unlock it, hold down control, alt, delete and type in your password then press ok. The person that locked it is the only one who can unlock it.


Where do I save my files?

Save your files in your Documents folder.  This way you are the only person who can view these documents.  If you need  to give others access to your folders there is a folder called "shared" under your C:\ drive that you can share.


How do I share a folder?

Save the files or folders that you wish to share in the shared folder located on the C drive.

Go to Start and click on Computer. Click on Local Disk (C:) to open the C drive. Right click on the shared folder and select Share. The following window will appear:


Type the name of the person (or persons) that you wish to grant access to the shared files. (example: Click add. The person’s name will appear in the permissions box.

Note: The default permission level is Reader. To change the permission level, click on the down arrow next to Reader and select a different level.

Click share. If you would like to e-mail the person or persons to notify them that you have shared the files, click on the e-mail links. Click done to close the window.


I liked the old look of windows better, can I switch it back?

Sure can, right click your desktop and click Personalize, then click Windows Color and Appearance. Click the link that says Open classic appearance properties for more color options. Choose a color scheme from the menu. Click OK to finish.


How do I change my screensaver?

A screen saver is a program that displays moving graphics or words on your screen when you are not working. To choose a screen saver, select Personalize in the Control Panel then select the Screen Saver Link.

How do I change my desktop wallpaper?

Open up the Start Menu then select Control Panel.



Then click the Personalization icon. personalize


From there select the Desktop Background link.


This is where you can select/customize your desktop background.

Click the picture or color you want for your desktop background. If the picture you want to use is not in the list of desktop background pictures, click Browse to search for the picture on your computer. When you find the picture you want, double-click it. It will become your desktop background and appear in the list of desktop backgrounds.

Under How should the picture be positioned, choose to have the picture fit the screen, tile, or be centered on the screen, and then click OK.


How do I create a desktop shortcut?

Click Start, All Programs
Locate the program.
Right Click on the program.
Rest your mouse over Send to and then click Desktop (create shortcut) on the submenu that appears.


What is Windows Side Bar and Gadgets ?

Windows Sidebar is a long, vertical bar that is displayed on the side of your desktop. It contains mini-programs called gadgets, which offer information at a glance and provide easy access to frequently used tools. For example, you can use gadgets to display a picture slide show, view continuously updated headlines, or look up contacts.


Sidebar can keep information and tools readily available for you to use. With Sidebar, you can use the Feed Headlines gadget to show the latest news headlines from sources you choose. You don't have to stop working on your document, because the headlines are always visible. If you peripherally see a headline that interests you, you can click that headline, and your web browser will open directly to the story.


How do I pin and unpin items from the start menu?

Click the Windows Button, and then click All Programs.
Right-click on the program you want to Pin, and click Pin to Start menu.

To remove a pinned item from the Start menu

Click Start, and then Right-click on the program you want to remove, select unpin from start menu.


How do I turn the taskbar option on or off?

You can access the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties dialog box in Windows 7/Vista using the same methods that you do in Windows XP. You can right-click on the Start button or the Taskbar and select the Properties command or you can open the Control Panel, select Appearance and Personalization, and then click the Taskbar and Start Menu icon.

Customize the Taskbar

Click the Windows button to open up the Start Menu. Right-click on the Start Menu then click properties. The Taskbar and Start Menu Properties box will appear. Select the Task bar tab. Click the How do I customize the taskbar? link for step by step instructions of ways to configure your taskbar to your liking.


Live Thumbnails on the Taskbar

When you move your mouse pointer to a taskbar button, a small picture appears that shows you a miniature version of the corresponding window. This preview, also called a thumbnail, is especially useful if you can't identify a window by its title alone. And if one of your windows has video or animation playing, you'll see it playing in the preview.When you point to a grouped taskbar button, you'll see a stack of previews, but only the topmost preview will be visible. This feature is only available if you are running Windows Aero.

Close a Group on the Taskbar

Right-click on the group on the taskbar you would like to close. Select the option Close Group and all items in that group will be closed.


How do I add a program to the Quick Launch toolbar?

The Quick Launch toolbar is located on the taskbar and is a convenient way to open programs. You can add or remove program icons on the Quick Launch toolbar so that you have easy access to the programs that you frequently use.

To add a program to the Quick Launch Toolbar, Click the icon of the program you want to add (you can find most program icons on the Start menu or the desktop), and then drag it to the Quick Launch toolbar.


What is the Instant Search Box?

The Search box is one of the most convenient ways to find things on your computer. The exact location of the items doesn't matter—the Search box will scour your programs and all of the folders in your personal folder (which includes Documents, Pictures, Music, Desktop, and other common locations). It will also search your e‑mail messages, saved instant messages, appointments, and contacts.


Instant Search can be found on the Start Menu, within Documents and Control Panel, Windows Photo Gallery and Windows Media Player. Anywhere you see the search field, just start typing, and you'll easily find what you're looking for quickly, consistently, and within the context of where you're searching.
