University Dance Company Audition Info

WHAT IS UDC?

University Dance Company is a faculty advised and student run concert dance organization. The focus of UDC is to promote dance as an art form and provide students an opportunity to become actively involved with all aspects of dance production through performance, choreography, technical design, and administrative work.  Students have an opportunity to work with both faculty and guest choreographers in the creation of new choreography, and there are ample opportunities for students to explore their creativity through their own choreography. UDC also tries to bring a variety of dance to campus through guest lectures and master classes. UDC has elections for student officers once a year in the positions of President, Vice Presidents, Secretary, Treasurer and Historian.

HOW DO I JOIN UDC?

Membership to UDC is through audition. UDC has two annual concerts and auditions are held twice each academic year. The Fall concert is primarily faculty and guest artist choreography. Auditions for the Fall concert usually occur during the first week of classes in late August. The spring concert provides student choreographers the opportunity to place their work on fellow students. Student choreographer auditions are usually held in late October. Auditions to perform in the spring concert are usually held prior to the Thanksgiving break.

WHAT SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT AUDITIONS?

UDC auditions are open to all WCU students and take place in the Dance studios (HSC 104) located in the Sturzebecker Health Science Center on South campus.

Dancers are asked to come at least 15 minutes early to start stretching. Each student will fill out an information sheet and receive a number. Auditions usually consist of a few short phrases taught by the UDC directors, guest artists or student choreographers. Results of the auditions are usually posted within a few days on the bulletin board outside of the dance studio.

We ask that those auditioning for UDC wear appropriate dance attire that allows the body to be seen for alignment and performance purposes.

For more information on UDC and its auditions, email Gretchen Studlien-Webb or Liz Staruch.

NOW IN REHEARSAL

UDC is now in rehearsal for the spring student concert, Breaking Pointe. The concert will include a variety of dance styles including modern, jazz, hip hop, lyrical, and tap.

The concert will be held April 17, 18 and 19, 2008 at 8pm and April 18 at 2pm in the Emilie K. Asplundh Concert Hall in the Phillips Memorial Building at the corner of High & University Sts on the campus of West Chester University. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Sykes Box Office at 610-436-2266 and are also available at the door.
