Mission Statement and Learning Outcomes

The mission of the Department of Music Theory and Composition is to provide an environment that promotes excellence and diversity in our students' preparation for careers in music theory and composition as composers, music theorists, and teachers.

  • Compose music that is expressive, demonstrating the proper techniques involved in, and related to, the production of a professional-level composition.
  • Write analytic papers that are clear and compelling, demonstrating a knowledge of diverse approaches to music theory analysis.
  • Compose music in a diversity of styles, demonstrating a broad knowledge of the musical literature and stylistic characteristics.  
  • Develop information literacy by displaying critical thinking and listening skills through written critiques of composition & musical analyses.
  • Work in collaboration with performers, engaging in proper rehearsal and performance techniques, leading to public presentation of new compositions.
  • Be prepared for future career opportunities.
