Mission Statement and Learning Outcomes

The mission of the Department of Music History of the School of Music at West Chester University is to service undergraduate degree programs in music as mandated by the National Association of Schools of Music and to service undergraduate non-music degree programs as indicated by the focus of general education studies.  At the graduate level, the mission of the music history department is to prepare the students for admission to doctoral programs at other institutions, to prepare the student for college-level teaching in the area of music history and music appreciation, to provide an alternative for students desiring to obtain permanent certification, to provide requisite course work for students in other music programs, and to help prepare students for occupational opportunities in related fields such as music editorship and publishing, music librarianship, music journalism and criticism, and music merchandising and marketing.

  • Undergraduate music students will demonstrate an understanding of the basic literature in the history of Western music (MHL 210, MHL 211, MHL 212)
  • "A music graduate from West Chester University must be, first of all, a total musician who is able to know the literature" (School of Music, Mission Statement from NASM Self Study)
