Community Music Program

A cooperative effort between West Chester University and West Chester Area School District providing music lessons to students 10 or over.Interested parties may contact Dr. Henry Grabb, Program Coordinator via email (hgrabb@wcupa.edu). The Brandywine International Piano Institute at West Chester University of Pennsylvania

July 9 - 20, 2013

The Piano Institute offers a workshop of intensive study comprising master classes and private lessons, with emphasis on technique, interpretation, and repertoire. All participants have daily access to air conditioned private practice facilities equipped with new Steinway grand pianos and have opportunities for weekly individual conferences. Public performance opportunities are offered to all students who wish to participate.

Summer Camps

WCU Elementary School and Middle School Summer Music Workshops

June 24 - June 28, 2013 (9am to 12noon)

Program Highlights:

  • Large-ensemble and small-ensemble performance opportunities include concert band, string orchestra, flute ensemble, clarinet ensemble, saxophone ensemble, brass ensemble and percussion ensemble.
  • Instruction from some of the region's finest educators and performers.
  • Daily faculty demonstrations allow students to see professional musicians perform in an intimate and engaging setting.
  • A finale concert, featuring all ensembles, for family and friends on Friday afternoon, June 28.

Cost: $210.00 per student (postmark by May 17, 2013 to qualify for early registration- $195.00)

WCU High School Summer Music Institute

Monday, July 8 - Saturday, July 13, 2013 (new this year - one additional day)

West Chester University's 52nd annual High School Summer Music Institute will take place from Monday, July 8th through Saturday, July 13th. The Institute offers resident and commuter options for students currently in grades 9 through 12. Students have the opportunity to perform in a variety of large and small ensembles including wind ensemble, string orchestra, chorus, flute ensemble, clarinet ensemble, saxophone ensemble, double reed ensemble, brass ensemble, percussion ensemble and vocal ensemble. All ensembles perform at the end of the Institute, and all concerts are open to family and friends. Auditions for a solo recital are held at the beginning of the week.

The Institute’s faculty consists primarily of West Chester University professors, all of whom are active performing artists in the Philadelphia region. Each student receives two private lessons and two studio masterclasses on their primary instrument or voice. Students will also participate in music theory/ear training, college prep and audition prep classes.

Recreational activities include pizza parties, volleyball and other organized evening activities.

Tuition and camper options:

  • Resident: $675 (includes full camp curriculum, room and board)
  • Resident Early Registration: $650 (if postmarked before May 17, 2013)
  • Commuter: $585 (includes full camp curriculum, daily lunches and dinners)

Summer Jazz Workshop

Sunday, July 14 - Friday, July 19 , 2013

Designed for advanced middle school and all high school students, participants will explore the pedagogy of jazz improvisation, arranging, orchestration, jazz history and performance techniques. Visiting artists as well as the WCU faculty will perform and conduct mastercalsses on various subjects. All participants will need to have a knowledge of scales, be able to read music, transpose and be proficient on an instrument.

Summer Leadership and Marching Band Camp

July 22 - July 25 , 2013

Lead by nationally acclaimed experts ( including: Tim Lautzenheiser, John Villella, Thom Hannum, Andrew Yozviak, and Heidi Sarver) the camp has tracks for drum major, color guard, percussion, twirling, and a leadership marching Band. This is an opportunity to experience a group dynamic where everyone is committed to excellence and a program where the staff will provide detailed instruction working with contemporary music and drill.

The Director and Staff sessions offered include: Rehearsal techniques, organization and administration, leadership, drill writing, conducting, literature, band pedagogy, and technology. Graduate and Act 48 credits are available
