Artist's Statement

Most of my images are about conveying the spirit of place.  My ability to
see visual relationships between people, culture and environment is
heightened by the spirit of place.  Much of photography is about being in
the moment ... this is being aware of the second that an interaction takes
place, between people, between people and their environment, and between
elements within an environment.  The French photographer, Henri
Cartier-Bresson, referred to this as the "decisive moment."  For me, that
sense of being in the moment is a natural part of experiencing another
culture and place.

When I work in black and white photography my process is to make all
decisions about the image the moment I make the photograph.  In creating the
color digital images I have adopted a different way of working, which is
perhaps more similar to traditional art processes.  I gather images first
and combine them later, often starting with an idea which evolves over time.
The resulting work is still about place, but on a different level.
