Artist's
Statement
The practice of design is evolving and expanding in
ways not thought of by practitioners throughout most of the 20th century.
Not only are the tools of the trade completely different from the profession
twenty years ago but the skillsets have also undergone tremendous change.
An understanding of interactivity, sound and motion are now important
parts of the young designer's future.
Despite the changing face of technology and visual
culture, I make little differentiation between the new technology and
the older technologies of art and design in my own approach to working.
The same visual strategies, concepts and acuities enter into the creation
of a drawing, an interactive video or a catalog, only the tools change.
Part of the reason for my involvement with the internet and
developing Web technologies is a desire to understand and participate
in their revolutionary potential to alter the meaning of visual communications,
rather than leave this transformative power solely in the hands of technology
specialists and engineers.
